Legacy, chosen identity, and character building

Dungeons & Dragons

What is a Tiefling name?

Tieflings are a Dungeons & Dragons species linked to Fiends, which include devils and demons from otherworldly realms called the Lower Planes. Official rules state that this legacy does not decide a Tiefling's moral outlook.

The 2014 Basic Rules describe cultural names, Infernal names, and chosen virtue names. A virtue name is a word for an idea that the character tries to embody.

This fan-made generator uses original infernal-style forms and concept names. It is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

Heritage and choice

Three paths to a Tiefling name

A Tiefling name can connect a character to the culture that raised them, to fiendish family history, or to a chosen idea.

The naming choice can show belonging more clearly than appearance alone.

01 · Cultural names

Start with the place that raised the character

  • Use the naming style of the home city, family, or community.
  • Match the name to the character's first language.
  • Let adoption, migration, or exile change the form.
  • Use this path when culture matters more than ancestry.

02 · Infernal-style names

Use sound without claiming a translation

Rhythm
Use two to four clear spoken beats.
Sound
Mix hard consonants with open vowel endings.
Lineage
Repeat one sound across relatives when useful.

The generated forms are creative. They are not official Infernal words.

03 · Chosen names

Name the idea the character carries

Choose a concept that creates action. Hope can be a promise, Mercy can be a test, and Chance can be a way of life.

Identity goalPersonal tensionChosen name

Mercy + hard choices → Zariel Mercy
Glory + family pressure → Makaria Glory
Chance + restless travel → Rieta Chance

Inherited or chosen

A birth name and a virtue name tell different stories

A birth name can show family, culture, and the hopes of other people. It connects the character to a past they did not choose.

A virtue name can state the identity the character wants to build. The word can be sincere, ironic, unfinished, or difficult.

Use both when the character moves between communities or keeps one name private.

Build your Tiefling

Make the name part of the character's choice

Decide who gave the name and whether the character still accepts it. That answer can shape the full backstory.

01

Pact scholar

Use an inherited infernal-style name. Decide whether the character studies the legacy or fears it.

02

Street survivor

Use a short chosen name that works as a warning, joke, or rule for survival.

03

Noble exile

Keep a formal family name and add a private chosen name. Let each name open a different door.

04

Idealist adventurer

Choose a concept such as Hope, Truth, or Resolve. Give the character a hard chance to live up to it.
